Travel Insurance Woes.
Your Very Tricky Travel Insurance.
My blood pressure just shoot up to boiling point after
receiving a reply from FWD travel insurance after almost 3 months, saying they
have rejected my claim for the damaged baggage.
I am trying to be calm here, but my nose is all flaring up
now.
Last April upon coming back from Shanghai, I reported a
damaged baggage upon arrival and immediately the day after, I reported to
Singapore Airlines and FWD Insurance.
I am a nerd believer of travel insurance, I feel travelling
is a risky business and would always want to have my ass covered especially for
this trip since I am travelling with my laptop and other business
paraphernalia.
At first I was hesitant to report to the airlines and
decided to do the claim instead to FWD, but I did both anyway. If SQ would
reject my claim then at least I tried, I could say.
Right after a few days I got an email from SQ with a
proposal to compensate me for the damage. My luggage was not brand new so after
their assessment they decided to give me 50% of the value.
Not bad, so I accepted. It could help me top up to buy a new
one, so I was waiting for a reply from FWD Insurance with a thought that maybe,
with their share I could actually buy a brand new luggage.
Weeks passed, and then Months.
I followed them up for the status more than twice and got
the reply only today:
REJECTED.
Reason: Singapore Airlines has already compensated me.
I replied to them below:

Seriously???
I bought this travel insurance in good faith believing that my trip and
personal belongings are being protected.
But just because Singapore Airlines responded way faster than you did
and compensated me way before you did, then you have decided not to cover?
To be honest I was not expecting for the airlines to cover but they did
and I was expecting for my insurance to cover but didn't.
What an irony, I should have known!
So this has been a big lesson for me.
Choose your Insurance carefully and review the terms and
conditions thoroughly.
ouch! |
I’m always too trusting with them that I do not bother to
review the clauses.
I am just lucky that it was just damaged baggage, what if it
was worse – lost baggage or God forbid – accidents???
We do not want anything bad to happen but when that happens
and the one thing you thought could be depended upon just fails you? It’s just
a disaster.
I am extremely disappointed.
I just wish Insurance companies are more sincere with their promises
and not trying to work their way out of the situation when they receive claims.
We do not wish for incidents just to do a claim, some maybe yes, but generally
we don’t.
Hopefully this does not happen to anyone. I would not want
it to happen to anyone.
But one thing for sure that will not happen again – buying from
FWD Insurance.
No, not ever.
